Follicum Completes Phase 2A With Data To Follow

Another important milestone has been achieved by the Swedish biotech company Follicum.

Today, Follicum announced that all patients participating in their phase 2a clinical trial have completed treatment. The phase 2a trial took place at centers in Berlin and Hamburg, Germany and was carried out over the past 3 months. 60 subjects participated and received 3 injections per week, with some subjects receiving FOL-005 and others receiving placebo. Apparently, 5 different doses (including placebo) were administered during the trial.

According to the official press release, Follicum aims to announce the results of this phase 2a trial in Autumn 2018. That’s soon. The company is also planning to initiate a phase 2b trial including both men and women with the new topical formulation of FOL-005 in the near future.

The results from this phase 2a trial represent a decisive moment for what could be a new viable hair growth candidate. FOL-005 has been making steady progress through the clinical process and we will get to see what it’s capable of.

The companies outside of the United States need the FDA approval?

  3. Ahmed bekeer on August 28, 2018 at 11:30 pm

If this treatment is successful and FDA approval will be on the market by the end of 2020

I don’t get it Why even use a placebo in a study for trying to cure hair loss ? Makes no sense.

    • John Taylor on September 2, 2018 at 10:45 am

Placebo grows some hair. Look at the minoxidil and finasteride studies

  5. Fahad on August 29, 2018 at 2:57 pm

Im tired of reading these news
    we want a release date
Its been 25 years since Finasteride came out
    Its really depressing

I completely understand what you’re saying and where you’re coming from, and I thank you for the opportunity to provide this response.

I understand that the news of a trial completing is not as gratifying as hearing that the treatment has been released, however we must realize that in order to ever receive the news someday that “this treatment has been released to market”, it would have had to go through the steps of the clinical trial first. The news of completing a phase 2 trial is a major step.

Some have the tendency to get excited when articles come out in the media about a scientist making a new discovery in laboratory, it’s fun but things like that have much further to go than the news of this article you are commenting on now. The main point here is, although this news is not a tube of cream you can rub into your scalp it’s the best news we can receive at this time and it deserves gratitude. You won’t receive the press release stating that “drug X has been FDA approved”, without receiving the news that drug x phase 1-2-3 trials have been completed first. Gratitude is always the best option and it will make you feel better too. Best wishes to you.

Well done for a very restrained response. If people don’t want the news you provide don’t come here and wait for the headlines on all the news channels around the world when a viable cure is found. This year some great strides have been made and I like the way this site projects such news. No hype or exaggeration, just a well informed news feed giving it to readers how it is. Please keep up the good work.

Does anyone know how this peptide work to growth hair ?

  7. br1 on August 30, 2018 at 9:17 am

how many phase2 are needed? a,b,c,d…

    (honest question)

    • Follicle Thought on August 30, 2018 at 1:19 pm

No worries, I’m not sure exactly. In most cases both a and b happen, but I think that’s up to the company usually. It may be the case that only one phase 2 is necessary on the regulatory side.

      • Follicle Thought on August 31, 2018 at 3:16 am

Kira, Follicum found a significant hair growth effect in mice which drove the development of their company. This is the typical format and you can read about it on their website.

Whether or not it works in humans, we don’t know. Let’s see the results from the trial.

        • Kira on August 31, 2018 at 3:44 am

          @admin:
I am fully aware of their story and discovery and to me, it is such a serendipity. However, I am more interested in the mechanism of this peptide, for example, SM04454 work by using WNT pathway, Breezula works by binding to AR, etc. Such explanation of mechanism will give patients more confidence about the treatment that they are on. Hope that they could give a sound explanation 🙂

The best news that can possibly come out now is shiseido, cause they’ve already done the “final steps” and the news are due soon within a month or two

  9. Dimitri on August 30, 2018 at 7:57 pm

Since i discovered that s website there are news coming out at least once a month. And the news all seem promising. I am grateful fo your work. Now get my hair growing please. Thanks. No, really, thanks a million!

I can’t believe I had a full head of hair just 3yrs ago.

    • Michael on September 1, 2018 at 2:36 am

Life sucks, I’m m right there with you. Lost a whole lot of density in the last year and a half.

    • larry on September 2, 2018 at 9:59 am

dude use LLLT, cetirizine 1% in ethanol 96º and nizoral. by themselves they are weak but together will slow down your follicular massacre. be scientific, there are studies backing this up.

  11. Matt on August 31, 2018 at 3:43 pm

I am really looking forward to trying the next approved product. Things really look promising. Thank you Admin for supplying us with these good news articles. Hairloss is tough on people and it seems to take forever for a product to come to market.

    • Follicle Thought on September 1, 2018 at 12:40 am

Thanks for the kind words DMDM. Too add on, I’m also hoping to see people share some things they do in their own time which can support the hair growth industry. I wrote a new Update section about this. Would love to hear from people.
