Stemson Therapeutics Featured In Atlantic Article

The hair multiplication company from La Jolla, California has been making headlines all across the internet since its presentation at the ISSCR meeting and the launch of its website in late June 2019.

After the initial publication and announcement was released on the Sanford Burnham Prebys website (affiliated organization with Stemson Tx) many articles were written on various websites reiterating the facts that were stated. The initial article from SBP talked about Alexey Terskikh’s work in creating a biodegradable scaffold which would help Stemson’s hair-inducing cells grow in a proper uniform direction when injected beneath the skin. But, there was no mention in the press release or on Stemson’s website of the almighty important factor – clinical trials. Nothing new was presented in all of the subsequent internet articles either, until now.

First Sight Of Stemson

For the first time in a new article published today, the company has referenced when it plans to begin human trials for its groundbreaking iPSC therapy to generate de novo follicle growth. Geoff Hamilton, CEO of Stemson Therapeutics, had this to say about the timeline for Stemson to begin trialing in humans:

“At the meeting last month, Hamilton’s group proposed one solution. It involves a synthetic scaffold, which Hamilton will describe only as proprietary. The scaffold would be implanted around the cloned follicle to direct the growth of the hair. Stemson Therapeutics recently partnered with the pharmaceutical giant Allergan to develop this scaffold for cloned hair, and Hamilton says they expect to start a clinical trial in humans in about a year and a half.”

Getting a timeline for a clinical trial is a big positive, though I expect there to be a mixed reaction to the news. This would put an estimated time period of January 2021 for the start of Stemson clinical trials. Update: It has been confirmed from Geoff Hamilton that he was indeed misquoted in the Atlantic article regarding the potential of a human trial.

So I guess they were right about hair cloning in the US. Seems likely like it’s not coming until mid-late 2020s stateside. I doubt Tsuji will release that late, as both their trials legislation go along much quicker but either way this is good news. It means the cure has a heartbeat and it’s only a matter of time before the blood starts pumping.

Financial confidence radiates from all you none of you seemed the bit lease worried about how in the world to come up with the money to pay for hair clones in Japan I will develop tunnel vision for 3 years save up as much money as possible before it begins to feel unethical if as soon as a “hair cure” where to be commercialized to the public that then the f.d.a would stop calling it cosmetic in my wishful thinking this would encourage medical insurance companies to give us coverage hair cloning will take a while in the mean time what can be done to get health insurance companies attention?

    As expected..
Can you check this out? Big claims, expensive, available tho.. If only they can provide some photos, study results etc.

    • Follicle Thought on July 25, 2019 at 7:58 pm

I’ve heard of exosomes before being used for hair growth, however the results are most likely in the range of PRP. Once in a while there are noticeable results, even impressive, but there’s always the chance that several people will not receive any benefit from it. In this case, the treatments are most likely over $1,000 like you mentioned.

      • Greg on July 26, 2019 at 6:55 am

I actually had this threatment done a month and a half ago. (Exosomes) My advice: don’t get it if you’re a teen or in your early 20s. It ain’t going to fight off the DHT. PS it cost me like five g’s.

        • faust on July 26, 2019 at 7:24 am

          Any results yet?
Did they show you any proof of concept before the procedure?

        • Follicle Thought on July 26, 2019 at 8:41 am

Greg: Yes, curious as to where you had the procedure done and what kind of results you saw with it?

          • Greg on July 26, 2019 at 4:06 pm

I had the procedure done at a local stem cell clinic called anatara medicine. So far haven’t seen any results, only a slight bit more recession, but it’s still early – just a month and a half after the procedure. They said it could take up to 3 months to see results. They showed me some before and after pics after of a guy in his 40s who has it done. He had mild results – comparable to minoxidil, maybe a little stronger.

But this procedure isn’t for guys who start losing it in their teens or early twenties.

The way it works is that the exosomes migrate into damaged follicles and strengthen them. But if you’re very young, or your genetics are just relentless, you’re loaded with DHT and this procedure doesn’t deal with that.

If you didn’t lose 50% of your hair in four years (like me) and if you have a slower progression then I would try it out or maybe just Acell if you don’t want to spend as much.

Haha, I like the positivity Tony! New waves are still coming through not to mention other companies like HairClone making moves. Science is going to have to succeed at some point.

I think all trials should go to hell? until any of real market product is launched

    • Follicle Thought on July 26, 2019 at 8:42 am

The way it works we need trials first then products launched.

  5. Alan J on July 26, 2019 at 3:08 am

The news that they planning trials for as soon as early 2021 (possibly) is very encouraging; though even if all goes well we are probably not looking at commercialization for four to five years (minimum). I have no idea whether Tsuji will be first with hair multiplication, but with so many players one hopes it will act as a spur towards being the first and therefore market leader. Reading the piece on L’Oreal and hair printing I was slightly surprised by the almost second thought on hair multiplication to cure baldness directly rather than as a means to test products like shampoos. After all, there is a very great deal of money to be made for whoever gets to market first, so you’d think they would put all their resources into that. Thanks as ever for your work.

    • Follicle Thought on July 26, 2019 at 8:47 am

Stemson/Rapunzel appear to be in a similar boat for when trials could start.

  6. Alan J on July 26, 2019 at 3:49 am

PS Can anyone explain in laymen’s terms what the basic difference is between what Stemson is working on, and Rapunzel?

    • Greg on July 26, 2019 at 7:00 am

@Alan J I think Rapunzel is direct 3D priming of hair follicle parts and then culturing then in a collagen growth medium why Stemson is just using the two types of IPCs.

Also there are a lot of different players looking to get to the cure first but that doesn’t mean a variety of them won’t come out. Because after all the real reason they’re regrowing Hair FIRST is so they can regenerate other organs like hearts and livers and other tissues later on.

have anybody some update about ngf-574h?

  8. Matt on July 26, 2019 at 8:59 am

    Just to make you aware,
Ive tried repkying to comments youve made in the discussion threads and the link to reply doesnt seem to work.

When will you providing us with a Hairclone update?
    Also,
Which one of the recent articles has been the ‘big news’ we’ve been expecting from you?
Theres been so many positive updates lately.

I would like to express my gratitude to you for keeping us informed with all these new developments through this blog.
I think many readers will agree this site is an imvaluable source of hope.
    Thank you!

    • Follicle Thought on July 26, 2019 at 10:28 am

Thanks for the tip Matt, are you registered and logged in to reply to the forum? If so, I will look into a new plugin to use for the forum.

HairClone update is all but certain to be within a week.

As far as the big news which has been in works for a while, let’s call it ‘important’ news instead, and it hasn’t been released yet. Company is taking their time. It will get out. Dealing with these companies can be a fickle situation, they can be ready to share some news and then have some small change of plans etc. and things get pushed back a few weeks. Thanks very much for the kind words!

      • Matt on July 26, 2019 at 2:29 pm

        Perhaps that’s the issue,
        I haven’t registered.
I will register and comment on here if the problem persists.

I imagine the Hairclone update is regarding their plans for their follicle banking service and hopefully their follicle rejuvenation therapy.

I know there is know evidence of the effiacy of their proposed treatment but I believe its based off Anderans work,
Is there anything Anderans ever published regarding the effiacy of the product they were developing before they decided to drop it?

Ok so something else to look forward to from you then.
        It feels like christmas.

        • Follicle Thought on July 26, 2019 at 3:10 pm

Here are some images I pulled up for the old Aderans therapy.
          View the images here.
The technology is from 2012, what do you guys think?

          • Matt on July 26, 2019 at 7:44 pm

Ok so looking at those images is actually very encouraging.

Its a shame that last photo at the bottom is such poor resolution, although there looks like clear improvement its difficult to discern due to the image quality.

There is a +98 terminal hair count quoted there, is that per 1cm2?

Why did Anderans not pursue this?
I wasn’t active on these sites at that time so not aware with what happened at that time (my hairloss didnt become apparent until 2017)

            • Follicle Thought on July 26, 2019 at 7:58 pm

The last image does show that the bald vertex space filled in around the edges pretty well. As for the +98 terminal hair count, I’m not sure how large the target area was, certainly not a 1cm2 that would have been beyond incredible.

Aderans showed a proof of concept here, as you can see, however they just weren’t able to show consistent cosmetically significant results. It seemed like their technology just needed to be a few notches higher than it was to continue its funding.

          • Matt on July 27, 2019 at 11:41 am

            Ok I see,
Presumably the gentleman pictured is an example of their best responders.

Agreed that +98 terminal count would be monumental!

Lets hope that Hairclone has or can refine the technology and produce even greater and consistent results.
And that the price isnt in a realm beyond the reach of most of us.

            • Follicle Thought on July 27, 2019 at 1:23 pm

Price should not be too bad, especially compared to the prices I’m hearing for exosome injections.

It all depends on the refinement of the technology like you mentioned. They do have about 8 years of potential advancement and are utilizing a way to screen DP cell genetics at a much faster rate which Paul Kemp mentioned in this interview back in 2016.

  9. Benji on July 26, 2019 at 12:23 pm

A wild guess: Shiseido results were amazing and HairClone are going to use the therapy immediately!

    • Follicle Thought on July 26, 2019 at 1:53 pm

Well, that would certainly be incredible, I’m not that ambitious about it, but I think anything towards progress and development from a company who has a regulatory bonus like Hairclone is good news.

    • Matt on July 26, 2019 at 2:30 pm

Have the Shiseido results been released yet?
Theres been no word of it so far and July is very nearly over…

      • Jwwwwwww on July 28, 2019 at 2:09 am

Last 3 day in July ,last week email to Shiseido still not reply 🙁

  10. Ry on July 26, 2019 at 2:18 pm

    Hi Admin,

Last year you posted a great excel document with all companies and where they situated in terms of product development. Without necessarily updating it, could you just post the link again please ? I cant’ find it anymore. Thx 🙂

    • Follicle Thought on July 27, 2019 at 11:31 am

Hi Ry, that image is from the Ultimate Guide to Hair Regeneration. I’ve just updated it for you and added it to the Updates thread.

  11. Pito on July 26, 2019 at 5:47 pm

Hi admin , i am 28 and I’ve been bald in the last six months،In your opinion, which one is better ? it’s better to do hair transplant in the near future, or to wait for Cloning hair and other solutions to be ready in the future ?

    • Follicle Thought on July 26, 2019 at 6:49 pm

Well, the release dates and technology does not come with a guarantee even though there are so many therapies in the pipeline. A hair transplant now is an option, provided you read up on FUT and FUE. Consider all of your options, it may be several years before a real hair multiplication therapy is available.

  12. Follicle Thought on July 27, 2019 at 6:29 pm

Just got this result image from one of the treatments in development, pretty sure am going to be getting more results soon to compare.

These photos make me interested in seeing more results https://folliclethought.com/case-study/

    • faust on July 27, 2019 at 7:04 pm

This is very good, big change, do you have time stamps?
Is this undergoing clinical trials, or is it cosmetic product?
      Thanks

      • Follicle Thought on July 27, 2019 at 7:34 pm

        Thanks for checking it out.

It’s in a clinical trial, I don’t have time stamps at the moment. I think 3 months but will double check. This Monday should be able to get in touch with company and get more images and information.

I will try G, I am certain though that the Google listing is just a mistake/not what it seems. Stemson is doing fine.
